How We Started The Harbours

The Harbours was created with a simple belief: people deserve more control over what they see, who they connect with, and the communities they choose to be part of.

Too many online platforms have become crowded with unwanted advertising, endless algorithms, clickbait, and content that has little to do with the interests that brought us there in the first place. We wanted to build something different—a place where families, creators, entrepreneurs, tradespeople, community groups, and everyday people can gather around the things they actually care about.

At The Harbours, you choose your Harbours. Whether you're an artist, musician, business owner, homeowner, athlete, crafter, parent, student, or lifelong learner, your feed is shaped by the communities you join—not by an algorithm deciding what keeps you scrolling. If you want more news, information, or specialized content, you can subscribe to those Harbours. If you'd rather take a break, you can step away without missing everything else.

We've also reimagined how businesses participate. Businesses are encouraged to contribute, teach, share their work, and become part of the community. Advertising belongs in dedicated Marketplace and promotional spaces where members can discover products and services without interrupting the conversations they came for. This keeps community spaces focused on learning, creating, and connecting while still allowing businesses to reach the audiences that matter most.

For families, safety comes first. Parents have greater oversight, younger members have age-appropriate spaces, and community standards are actively managed by real people. Technology helps us identify potential issues, but final decisions are made by humans who understand context, intent, and common sense.

The Harbours was built by a Canadian entrepreneur, mother, and community builder who believed there had to be a better way. It isn't backed by a billion-dollar corporation.
